The province's relatively small population of over 1.1 million individuals, with a substantial percentage residing in rural and remote areas, presents unique challenges for early-career researchers in the field of neurology. The insufficient number of specialized research facilities and trained personnel can hinder the advancement of knowledge in this critical field, impacting the delivery of neurological care to the population.
The primary barriers to effective research include inadequate access to modern research facilities and support services, particularly in rural regions where healthcare providers often lack the resources to engage in clinical research. Additionally, there is a notable shortage of trained neurologists and researchers focused on the province's specific health challenges, such as high incidences of Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. For emerging researchers, these obstacles can make establishing independent research programs nearly impossible.
To counteract these challenges, the Prairie Neurology Research Hub aims to create a collaborative environment that brings together neuroscientists and clinicians across Saskatchewan.
